Our mission

As part of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Melbourne, our mission is centered on spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ through:

  • Worship & Sacraments – Upholding the ancient Coptic Orthodox faith through the Divine Liturgy, prayers, and Holy Sacraments such as Baptism, Chrismation, the Eucharist, and Marriage.

  • Spiritual Education & Discipleship – Teaching the next generation about the Orthodox faith through Sunday School, theological studies, and mentorship programs for spiritual growth.

  • Community Outreach & Fellowship – Extending the love of Christ through charitable initiatives, humanitarian aid, and social services to support those in need within the Solomon Islands.

  • Cultural & Linguistic Preservation – Promoting the Coptic language, hymns, and traditions, while integrating and respecting the cultural values of the local communities.

We seek to be a spiritual home for all who wish to grow in their faith, guided by the Orthodox teachings that have been faithfully passed down through the centuries.

The Rich Heritage of the Coptic Orthodox Church

The Coptic Orthodox Church is one of the oldest Christian churches in the world, tracing its origins to St. Mark the Evangelist, who preached in Alexandria, Egypt in the first century. Since then, the Coptic Church has played a significant role in Christian theology, monasticism, and spiritual life.

Key Aspects of Our Heritage

1. Apostolic Roots

The Coptic Church is part of the Oriental Orthodox family and holds firmly to the faith delivered by Christ to His apostles. It has preserved its theological teachings and traditions despite centuries of challenges.

2. The Monastic Tradition

The Coptic Church is known as the "Mother of Monasticism," as it gave rise to the first Christian monastic communities in the 4th century through St. Anthony the Great, St. Pachomius, and St. Shenouda the Archimandrite. The monastic tradition continues today as a foundation of Orthodox spirituality.

3. The Coptic Language & Liturgy

The church maintains the ancient Coptic language, a descendant of the Egyptian language spoken in the time of the Pharaohs. It is still used in prayers and hymns during the Divine Liturgy, preserving a unique spiritual and historical identity.

4. Martyrdom & Perseverance

Known as the "Church of the Martyrs," the Coptic Church has withstood centuries of persecution while remaining steadfast in faith. The Coptic calendar begins with the year 284 AD, marking the great age of martyrdom during the reign of Emperor Diocletian.

5. A Church of Service & Evangelism

Throughout history, the Coptic Church has not only focused on monastic and theological contributions but has also expanded globally through missionary work, including in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. The Solomon Islands Mission is a continuation of this evangelical effort, bringing the light of Orthodoxy to new communities.
